The Five Moms All-Stars

Are you an all-star when it comes to working to raise awareness about cough medicine abuse? Do you know someone who is? If so, please take five minutes to fill out the application form below. We’re naming five Five Moms All-Stars in total, one a month through May 2008, honoring them here on FiveMoms.com. And did we mention each of our five Five Moms All-Stars gets an iPod Touch as a special thank you?

It’s easy to enter yourself or to nominate a friend. Fill in your contact details and tell us how you or your friend is using FiveMoms.com to help spread awareness about teen cough medicine abuse. We want to hear how you’re using what you’ve learned or downloaded from our web site out in the real world to help kids. Tell us, and you or your nominee just might be our next Five Moms All-Star.

Tell us a little bit about yourself or the person you are nominating: (500 characters or less)

Example: I’m a full-time mom of two teens and a pre-teen, and have a full-time job outside the home, as well. I have a busy life, but I also do my best to stay active in my community and attend school meetings as often as I can. And I try to make every soccer game and piano recital I can.

Tell us how you found out about the Five Moms campaign: (500 characters or less)

Example: I got an e-mail. It’s as simple as that. One of my friends—she’s active in the kids’ school’s PTA—found out about the Five Moms and sent me a note. Her kids are the same ages as mine, so we look out for each other and share whatever information we have.

Tell us how the Five Moms campaign has inspired you or your nominee to take action: (500 characters or less)

Example: I know kids face a lot of pressures, but I was shocked to hear about cough medicine abuse. I read the stuff you have online and checked out some of the resources you have on FiveMoms.com. I realize that my own kids could have been doing it, but now I am aware. Now I know what to look out for and can help them steer clear of this abuse.

Tell us what you or your nominee have done to help stop cough medicine abuse and the effect it has had on your community: (1000 characters or less)

Example: I’m active in my kids’ lives, but not all parents are. Some are working two jobs or just don’t know what dangers are out there. So, my friend (who told me about FiveMoms.com in the first place) and I decided to give a presentation at our last PTA meeting. We downloaded materials so parents could take them home, and even downloaded some of the fun ones, like the stickers. We explained to the parents what the problem is; what the warning signs are; and, importantly, what they can do to stop abuse, like know what medicines are in your medicine cabinet. We also gathered e-mail addresses, so we could send Five Moms tell-a-friend messages later in the evening. About 25 people were at the meeting, and 25 people shared their e-mail addresses with us, so I think they all realized how important this campaign is. They also all promised to send on the information to other people they know. It was so successful that my friend and I are going to bring Five Moms materials with us to every school event we volunteer at, like the concessions stand at soccer games. Three other parents also volunteered to do the same.
